One of my criteria for an excellent photograph is whether or not it makes you FEEL something. It doesn't have to be something pleasant, it can be fear or disgust or horror, but photographs should stir emotion within you. These stunning photographs by Elena Shumilova brought me to tears. Maybe it's their sheer beauty or maybe the subject matter is pretty close to home, but I was really moved. This has been said about her work, it "plunges the viewer into a beautiful world that revolves around two boys and their adorable dog, cat, duckling and rabbit friends. Taking advantage of natural colors, weather conditions and her enchanting surroundings, the gifted Russian artist creates cozy and heartwarming photography that will leave you amazed." While her work is obviously heartfelt, it is not in the slightest bit shmaltzy or cutsie to me. Precious isn't even a word I would use to describe it. It's very real,...and yet.....it's magical.
I love most how her images capture the true essence of little boys. The boys in the photographs are the photographer's sons and you can really feel her love for them reflected back in the images. “I largely trust my intuition and inspiration when I compose photos. I get inspired mainly by my desire to express something I feel, though I usually cannot tell exactly what that is” Shumilova explained in an interview with BoredPanda.
